Biography

Thomas Kretschmann began acting at the age of 25, after defecting to West Germany. He first appeared in European film projects, gaining fame in features Stalingrad and The Stendhal Syndrome.

It took a while for Kretschmann to break out in the United States -- it took the 2002 film The Pianist for American audiences to pay attention. That paved the way for several roles (mostly members of the Third Reich) in films, and later, American television beckoned, starting with a two-episode arc on Fox's 24.

Kretschmann also starred in films such as Resident Evil: Apocalypse, King Kong, Valkyrie and Wanted. He was also booked for the second Hellcat film, but left after his role was recast. In 2012, he was cast in the ABC series The River. The following year, he joined NBC's Dracula as Abraham Van Helsing.

Kretschmann was married to Lena Roklin, with whom he has three children.
