R&B and pop singer-songwriter and actress Mya
Marie Harrison was born on October 10, 1979 in Washington, D.C. but was raised in Glenn Dale, Maryland. Her mother, Theresa, was an accountant while her father, Sherman, was also a singer and a musician. She is of Italian and African-American descent and has two younger brothers named Chaz and Nijel.
Mya Harrison signed contracts with Haqq Islam's University Records and released her debut album Mya in 1997. This album contained the singles “It's All About Me” and “Moving On,” which both entered the top 10 of Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. She was nominated for the Best R&B Soul or Rap New Artist award at the Soul Train Music Awards. Her album was also nominated as Best R&B/Soul Album. Her other albums were Fear of Flying, Moodring and Liberation.
Beginning in 1998, Mya went on several concert tours such as the Smikin' Groove Tour, Lilith Faith Tour, MTV European Tour, Seagrams Live Tour and the BET Black College Tours. She also did the House of Blues Tour in 2001 and in 2003.
Mya Harrison collaborated with Christina Aguilera, Li'l Kim and Pink on the remake of “Lady Marmalade,” a song originally sung by Labelle, the R&B/soul group led by Patti Labelle, way back in 1974. The 2001 version was featured in the soundtrack of Baz Luhrmann's Academy Award-winning musical film Moulin Rouge!, which starred Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor.
She was also a featured artist on Pras' “Ghetto Supastar (That is What You Are).”
On TV, Mya was seen on shows Haunted, Navy NCIS
: Naval Criminal Investigative Service and 1-800 Missing.
She was part of films Chicago, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, Shall We Dance, Cursed and The Heart Specialist. She also did voice-over work for James Bond 007: Everything or Nothing.
Mya is a contestant on CBS' reality TV series Secret Talents of the Stars
, a show that pits celebrities against each other as they showcase their hidden abilities. Her hidden talent is tap dancing. In 2009, she was cast as one of the celebrities competing on the ninth season of Dancing with the Stars.
