Meryl Streep is an award-winning American actress regarded as one of the highly noted actors in film history. She is also known as the actress with the most number of Academy Award nominations, having a total of fourteen tucked under her belt. She also holds the record of Golden Globe nominations of any actor or actress, and has 23.
The daughter of commercial artist Mary W. Streep and pharmaceutical executive Harry William Streep, Jr., Meryl Streep was born on June 22, 1949 in Summit, New Jersey. She grew up in Bernardsville, New Jersey and is a graduate of Bernards High School. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Drama from Vassar College and her Master of Fine Arts from Yale University.
Meryl Streep made her debut in the big screen when she played a small but essential role in the 1977 drama Julia. Her sophomore film, The Deer Hunter, in which she co-starred with Robert De Niro earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. In 1979 she co-starred with Dustin Hoffman in Robert Benton’s film Adaptation Kramer vs. Kramer. Her outstanding performance in the film earned her, her first Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. In 1982, she once again impressed the whole film industry when she won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of Sophie Zawistowski in Alan J. Pakula’s Sophies Choice. Her first Emmy Award came when she starred in the miniseries Holocaust in 1978.
In 1988, Streep portrayed Lindy Chamberlain, an Australian mother accused of being responsible of her baby’s death in Fred Schepisi’s drama film A Cry in the Dark. Her remarkable performance in the film earned her a Best Actress award in the Cannes Film Festival.
During the 1990s Streep took on a wider variety of roles as seen in her performances in the films Postcards from the Edge and Death Becomes Her. She also appeared in the film version of Isabel Allende’s highly noted novel The House of the Spirits; The Bridges of Madison County directed by Clint Eastwood; The River Wild; She-Devil; Marvin's Room, in which she co-starred with Diane Keaton and Leonardo di Caprio; One True Thing; and Music of the Heart.
In 2007, Streep co-starred with Anne Hathaway in the box office hit The Devil Wears Prada, as the highly demanding New York fashion editor Miranda Priestly. Her outstanding portrayal on the role once again earned her a Golden Globe award for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy and her 14th Academy Award nomination.
