Megan Joy, born on August 5, 1985, is one of the finalists of the eighth season of American Idol. Hailing from Sandy, Utah, she is known for her quirky personality and voice.
She joined the show through auditions held in Salt Lake City, Utah. She didn’t feature in any of the show’s Hollywood episodes, eventually returning to the Top 36, when she was brought through. As part of the second batch of performers, her strange dance moves and quirky personality was brought to light, effectively making her a polarizing figure on the show—some viewers like her uniqueness, while some think she should be eliminated. The singer, who was influenced by Icelandic artist Bj?rk, was eliminated that week, but was later brought into the Wild Card round, and was selected to take one of the last finals slots.
Corkrey has since dropped her last name, preferring to be known as Megan Joy (Joy being her middle name) throughout the rest of the competition. She stated that the Corkrey name belonged to her former husband, and she preferred to start anew on the show. It was during the Top 13 when she earned her reputation for choosing obscure songs to perform; while this decision has also split audiences, the judges applauded her ability to choose a song that fits her, and one that she can inject her personality into.
