Mary-Kate Olsen, born June 13, 1986 in Sherman Oaks, California, is an actress, producer, executive producer, fashion designer and fashion model. She is best known for her successful acting career in roles with her twin sister Ashley Olsen.
Olsen started acting at nine months, when in 1987 she and Ashley landed the role of Michelle Tanner on the popular family sitcom Full House. Because of strict child labor laws, the girls shared time filming the role. The show ran through 1995, and the Olsen twins essentially grew up on camera. The girls recorded an album, Brother For Sale, and a music video called Our First Video (1993). After Full House ended, Mary-Kate and Ashley released a string of successful straight-to-video movies, titled Grandmother's House We Go (1992), Double, Double, Toil and Trouble (1993), and How the West Was Fun (1994), which became very popular with young children and pre-teens in the U.S. They also starred in the video series The Adventures of Mary-Kate and Ashley, in which they play young detectives. After further video successes, the girls hit the big screen in It Takes Two (1995), and then again starred in the television series Two of a Kind (1998-1999).
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are the most profitable twins in history, and two of the richest young celebrities in the world. Beyond their continued and extensive acting work, which includes too many film and television roles to name, in recent years the Olsen twins have built a fashion empire, selling their clothing, jewelry, accessory, and makeup lines in Wal-Marts across the nation. In 2006 the twins broke into the couture market by becoming the facing us the upscale fashion line Badgley Mischka, and have since launched two of their own high-end fashion lines, The Row in 2006 and Elizabeth & James in 2007.
Mary-Kate has shown a marked interest in continuing her acting with several serious and acclaimed solo projects. She has had a recurring role on Showtime's Weeds as a devout Christian who believes it is morally acceptable to smoke marijuana because it comes from the earth. She appears in the 2008 film The Wackness, and has been set to appear on ABC's Samantha Who? starring Christina Applegate.
