Lena Dunham was born in New York City. Dunham's father, Carroll Dunham, is a painter and her mother, Laurie Simmons, is a photographer and designer. Lena also has a younger sister named Grace who is a model and also starred in Lena's first film Tiny Furniture, which Lena wrote and directed. She is also known as the star and the creator of the HBO series Girls, which has earned various awards.
