Kevin Michael, born in 1985 in Chester, Pennsylvania to an Italian mother and an African-American father is an up-and-coming multi-genre blending musical artist.. Michael's mixed race heritage deeply affects the diversity of his music, which can be described as a unique combination of R&B, soul, funk, and pop elements.
Michael grew up listening, writing, and producing his own music. Michael is a self-taught vocalist, and gained early recognition for his talents, even being approached by record labels when he was just 11 years old. Instead of signing a contract, Michael decided to focus on increasing his skills in songwriting and producing demos throughout his teens. At age 16, Michael wrote his first song, after which he has said that he never considered doing anything but being a musician. Michael eventually signed with Atlantic Records in his early twenties after receiving attention from Virgin Records. Though Virgin was excited about their new talent, Michael's eclectic style proved to be difficult to market to mainstream listeners, but Virgin senior VP Josh Deutsche saw something special in Michael, and when he left Virgin to start the Atlantic sub-label Downtown Recordings, he took Kevin along.
Michael has been compared to Michael Jackson with his soulful singing, but keeps a hip hop edge. In 2007 Kevin Michael released his debut EP, Ya Dig?, as an iTunes-only release, and used the opportunity to promote his self-titled full-length album release, which dropped that October. His single “We All Want the Same Thing” was chosen by iTunes as their song of the week in May of 2007. Michael has collaborated with Wyclef Jean on his single “It Don’t Make A Difference,” and in 2007 toured with the group Maroon 5 after releasing his self-titled record that October. His songs have also been featured in Step Up 2: The Streets (2007) and the hit HBO series Entourage.
