Jeremy Barthel is 22 and lives in Los Angeles, California. What inspired him to dance were the music videos of Britney Spears. He started training professionally when he was 15 and studied jazz, hip-hop, modern, jazz funk and gymnastics. Of all the dance styles, he is most acquainted with jazz funk and prefers it among others because it focuses more on style and attitudes rather than technique.
Jeremy appeared in several music videos and also did a JBP commercial for Japan. The highlights of his career were performing at a Miss Universe competition and being hired three times for Mad TV. Janet Jackson's “Feedback” and “Death Cab for Cutie's “I Will Follow You Into the Dark” are just two of the songs which make him want to get up and dance.
His mother, Doris Barthel, is 50 and resides in San Diego, California. She motivated Jeremy by recruiting him as her salsa partner every so often. Doris and her son also enjoy reenacting scenes from Dirty Dancing, Doris' favorite movie of all time.Jeremy and Doris
Barthel are one of the ten competing pairs on the Lifetime TV reality series Your Mama Don't Dance
. Dubbed as the dance competition with a twist, contestants on the show auditioned without knowing that their dancing partners would be their very own parents. Five male contestants and five female contestants would foxtrot and mambo with their mothers and fathers as they compete to win the title and the $100,000 cash prize. Doris says that the best thing about being partnered with her son is that she already knows him so there's no need for major adjustments. She proudly shares that Jeremy has been very patient with her. On the other hand, Jeremy says that they are not trying to impress everybody or show anybody up, they just came to do the best they can do.
