Actor James McDaniel was raised in Washington, D.C. and attended the University of Pennsylvania where he majored in veterinary medicine. Fate took a different turn, however, as he decided to pursue a career in acting. His first role was a small one, appearing in Banzai. This was followed by a short performance on All My Children, plus several other guest roles in the late 1980s.

Soon, McDaniel earned bigger roles. He was seen on several episodes of Cop Rock, where he portrayed the character known as Officer Franklin Rose. He followed this up with a part on shows like LA Law, Law & Order, and Civil Wars. In 1992, he became known for playing Brother Earl in the movie Malcolm X. This was followed by a string of TV movies, which includes The Road to Galveston, Unforgivable, and A Deadly Vision.

Simultaneously, McDaniel was earning fame for portraying Lt. Arthur Fancy on NYPD Blue. He worked on the set from 1993 to 2001, before moving on to other projects. He was seen on shows like Fantasy Island and other small-screen pursuits, as well as the movie Sunshine State in 2002. This was followed by a role on three episodes of The Division, before he played General Beers on Steven Spielberg’s Taken. He has also received an Emmy and a Peabody Award, due to his performance in the Showtime movie Edge of America and an Emmy nomination for Public Television's Storytime.

From 2004 to 2005, McDaniel played William Miller on the dramedy Life As We Know It, before he landed a part on Las Vegas. Other credits of his include Love Monkey and Conviction, as well as the series Numb3rs. After appearing on even more TV productions, he was seen on The Good Wife and was later cast as Sgt. Jesse Longford on the ABC cop drama Detroit 1-8-7.

Being an accomplished stage actor, McDaniel won the prestigious Obie Award and was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for his portrayal in the New York stage production Before It Hits Home. He also received the Clarence Derwent Award for the Tony Award-winning Broadway play Six Degrees of Separation.
