Irulan Wilson was featured as a member of the cast in the twelfth season of the MTV reality television series The Real World, which was set in Las Vegas. She was 21 years old during the time of the show and originally hailed from the Bronx in New York. The biracial daughter of a black father and a white mother, she says she remembers being loved unconditionally by both her parents, and that she had an idyllic early childhood. But this changed when she was six years old and her father came down with a serious illness, passing away a year later.
Both Wilson and her mother learned to rely on each other after his death, and developed a deep bond that has been described by their friends as nothing short of extraordinary. However, she also went through a period in her life where she had issues with her body and image, though she was constantly considered beautiful. This was mainly during her time in high school, though she eventually dealt with her problems and learned to cope with them simply through her own strength of will. Wilson would go on to study and develop her abilities further at the famed Parsons School of Design.
