Biography

American comedian Bill Engvall was born on July 27, 1957 in Galveston, Texas. He started his career in Dallas, where he worked as a disc jockey while planning on pursuing a teaching career. One time, he decided to try his hand at stand-up comedy and realized that making people laugh is his forte. He soon moved to Los Angeles to pursue this dream.

He began performing his stand-up routines in numerous venues across Los Angeles, with his jokes revolving around everyday life and comments he finds stupid; eventually having his act recorded for television. He then took on acting for the screen, making his debut in the 1982 film Split Image. His first regular television role was in short-lived sitcom Delta, which aired in 1992. He also appeared on The Jeff Foxworthy Show, with his friend and frequent collaborator, Jeff Foxworthy. He released his first comedy album, Here’s Your Sign, in 1995; sales hit platinum, and later it would be followed by seven more releases.

Engvall’s reputation as a comedian was further solidified when he co-founded the Blue Collar Comedy Tour, with Foxworthy, Ron White and Larry the Cable Guy. The group was established in 2000 and started touring across the country. They were a smash hit; their success spurred the release of an album, in 2001, and three DVDs, the first being released in 2003. A year later, some members of the growing group collaborated together on television, resulting in Blue Collar TV, which lasted for two seasons; it was cancelled after the WB, its home network, and UPN merged to form the CW.

In 2007, Engvall started work on a new sitcom, The Bill Engvall Show. The series saw him play the role of Bill Pearson, a family counselor whose dysfunctional family needs help of its own as well. Aside from writing duties, he is also the executive producer of the show.
