Gillian Leigh Anderson was born on August 9, 1968 in Chicago, and is the only child of Edward and Rosemary Anderson. During her youth, her family had moved from place to place, like Crouch End in London and Grand Rapids, Michigan. After her education in Goodman Theater School of Drama at DePaul University in Chicago and the National Theatre of Great Britain at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, she moved to New York to pursue her career in acting. She appeared in plays such as Absent Friends and The Philanthropist, and her television shows included Home Fires Burning and Class of '96. Her films include The House of Mirth, The Mighty Celt, Tristram Shandy, and The Last King of Scotland. Anderson was cast for the role of Dana Scully for The X-Files in 1994. She was married to Clyde Klotz in 1994 and has a child with him. Her marriage ended around eight years later.
Special Agent Dana Katherine Scully is played by Gillian Anderson in the sci-fi television series The X-Files. Scully was born into a closely-knit Catholic family and was educated in the University of Maryland, where she earned her degree in physics. It is shown in the series that her Catholic faith had been the cornerstone in her life and that she always wears a golden crucifix necklace, a gift to her by her mother. As she was working with the X-Files, she was assigned to oppose Mulder's investigations using science. However, her investigations were objectively done so the Syndicate had dropped this endeavor. After two years of working with Mulder, the X-Files were closed and both were assigned to different locations.
