Nina Dobrev may be returning to television in the 2018-2019 TV season, but not as Elena Gilbert on the CW's potential Vampire Diaries and Originals spin-off. Instead, the 29-year-old actress has landed the lead role in a new sitcom pilot for CBS.

Dobrev has landed the lead role of Clem in Fam, a multi-camera sitcom being developed by CBS. The show centers on a young woman (Dobrev) who gets engaged to the man of her dreams and gets welcomed into his sophisticated family, but things go south when her trainwreck younger sister shows up.

Fam, written by Corinne Kingsbury (who worked as a writer and story editor on HBO's The Newsroom and the short-lived ABC comedy Back in the Game), is one of several new comedy pilots being developed by CBS hoping to make it onto the 2018-2019 schedule. For each of the past two years, CBS has ordered four new comedy pilots to series.

Fam also stars Odessa Adlon as Clem's disastrous younger sister and Tony winner Brian Stokes Mitchell as her successful future father-in-law.

CBS has already renewed The Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon for the 2018-2019 TV season, in addition to ordering a reboot of Murphy Brown. The network has a deep bench of current sitcoms that are awaiting decisions on whether they will be renewed or cancelled, including Mom, Life in Pieces, Kevin Can Wait, Man with a Plan, Superior Donuts as well as freshman comedies 9JKL and Living Biblically. Me, Myself and I has already been cancelled.
