Check out the full video interviews and highlights.

Executive Producer Caroline Dries Interview

Highlights from the interview:

  • Elena and Damon spent the summer on an "in-home honeymoon." They have no idea that Stefan underwater drowning and coming back to life.
  • Elena's attitude is that "I'm going to be a functioning, normal human vampire." And, she's headed off to college.
  • She hits road bumps. She goes to college and "uncovers a greater conspiracy at Whitmore." That will be a mystery to unravel this season.
  • Dries understands the fan reaction on twitter. She says she would have been one of them if twitter was around back in the days of Dawson's Creek.
  • Silas will be the Big Bad of the season and incorporating himself into Mystic Falls.
  • No one knows that Stefan's missing. They think he went to New York or wherever with Lexi. They wonder why he hasn't called, but don't know what's up with him.
  • Stefan's story will get dark when he deals with the repercussions from being in hell under water. "It will be a new Stefan."
  • Silas will be in town right away when the season begins.
  • Dries doesn't see the show as a vampire show but as a "gothic love story." And, a teenage love triangle.
  • They don't want to have "two orbits" happening with Mystic Falls and Whitmore College. They are only a car ride away so they will be going back and forth. The premiere will feel a bit separate, but the two worlds will be better integrated after that.

Highlights from the interview:

  • The season begins with Bonnie as a ghost on the other side. Jeremy is the only one that can see and communicate with her.
  • Bonnie went from a character with so much power over the last couple seasons and now she's lost that.
  • "I got a little bloody last night."
  • Bonnie can come into the "human dimension" and go anywhere she wants to go, but she can only talk to Jeremy or others will his ability.
  • Graham thought Bonnie's death would be temporary given that her character has died before. She was nervous for the fan reaction to Bonnie dying. And, they reacted worse than she thought. Julie Plec's reassurance that she had plans for Bonnie helped get people to "cool their jets after that."
The Vampire Diaries season 5 premieres on Thursday, October 3 at 8 pm ET on the CW.
