After years of waiting in the wings, Ashley Tisdale
is getting her first starring role. The 22-year-old actress has been signed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. (MGM) to star in a straight to DVD movie entitled Picture This
. This past week, Jason Weiss, Vice President of MGM's DVD Premiere division made the announcement. "Ashley is clearly a huge talent and we couldn't be more excited to be working with her on this movie. She has built an incredible following and has become an icon for today's teen audience,” he said in a press release.
In the movie, Tisdale plays Mandy, a high school student invited to a party by the most popular boy. The problem is that she's grounded and will have to find a way around her punishment in order to attend. Fellow Disney actor Robbie Arnell plays that boy, Drew Patterson. Fan know Patterson as Max on Life with Derek. The movie also features Canadian actress Shenae Grimes and move star Kevin Pollack. Pollack has been seen over the last few years in The Santa Clause and Dr. Dolittle movies. Picture This is written by Temple Matthews and directed by Stephen Herek.
Tisdale's career has been on the rise this year. She was named one of People magazine's "Hottest Stars Under 25" and released an album, Headstrong. She's got job security in television, balancing both The Suite Life of Zack and Cody
as well as a turn as an animated voice on Phineas and Ferb
. Oh yeah, and she's in a little trilogy called High School Musical
which will go down in pop culture history.
This new partnership with MGM can perhaps only spell bigger and better things for the young star. Perhaps she will be featured on the Picture This
soundtrack. Also, MGM is committed to a new DVD installment of Legally Blonde. Could Tisdale be the new Elle?
