Very recently, we reported that despite the positive hype that The Secret Life of the American Teenager has been getting, it has similarly received flak from critics for veering away from the real issue when it comes to teenage pregnancy.  Some say it just milks the issue of all its drama to make for a very interesting show, while others maintain that it has helped in opening up the topic so parents and their kids can discuss it with relative ease.

In an interview, Shailene Woodley, who plays the teenager whose seemingly perfect teenage existence is ruined by a pregnancy test kit, said it is probably best to just look away when it comes to criticisms, be it with the way the show is running or her acting itself.  On the flip side, she said she just wants to focus on the “challenging” role she's playing.

“So far I haven't looked for it, so I haven't received any criticism,” she said.  “The role has been challenging in some sense, because she's basically sad and lost in tragedy but still a teenager, still excited about school dances, and she has a new boyfriend and she's finding love for the first time.  So it's a bunch of different colors that I kind of have to put into one rainbow, so it's been fun to figure out.”

It also helps that everyone in the cast of The Secret Life is “incredible,” according to Woodley.

“Everyone's so down to earth and just so optimistic about the future, and everyone wants to inspire and change the world.  So it's such a great setting to be in. It's like a second family, and I am the youngest out of everybody.”
