The Office: Dwight Enters the Pantheon

The Office remains hysterical while its stories get more and more ridiculous. And yet, the show retains its sense of “real-ness?, but the writers are branching out, not afraid to take full advantage and explore the studio space. Steve Carrell is still incredible as the face of The Office, but he's not the one who gets the most laughs. At least not anymore.
I think its getting to the point where we all need to take a step back and consider the character of Dwight Schrute and his place on the list of all-time funniest TV characters. Last night's episode of The Office was a perfect example of the mad hilarity that emanates from Dwight Schrute. Whether it was designing a robot shrine for Michael's newly deceased ex-boss, trying to stuff a dead bird into a pop can, telling of how he absorbed the fetus of his twin brother while in his mother's womb, or performing at the bird funeral with his bright green recorder, Dwight Schrute is a character that will go down in the history books. Rainn Wilson play Schrute with utter fearlessness, consistency, and a perfect sense of how much is enough and what is too much. The Dwight character would be an easy one to over play, but Wilson reigns Dwight in just the right amount.
Dwight Schrute, in my mind, is already a top ten second-banana character in the history of television. A bold proclamation? Perhaps. But I can't think of another character (Eric Cartman withstanding, seeing as he's computer-generated) since Kramer who made me laugh so hard, and often.
