"The Fosters has never shied away from tackling important social issues like immigration rights, LGBTQ rights and adoption rights," said series executive producder Joanna Johnson. "We will continue to tell those important stories this season for those who too often are not heard."
The first half of season 5 ended with Callie and AJ ditching prom to keep Ximena from being taken away by ICE agents. Although they found refuge in a church, their ordeal is far from over.
"Callie is struggling with whether to be an activist in her life, or just be more focused on her own success and her own journey," executive producer Joanna Johnson told TVLine
. "The truth is, like Aaron says in one episode, 'I don't think that's who you are. I think you are someone who, in her heart, cares about others and is an activist.' But the question is: How can she do that in a way that is not self-destructive?"
According to co-creator/executive producer Bradley Bredeweg, "it's going to take some time" before they are able to safely leave the church. "It doesn't happen overnight, and perhaps Ximena will be in there longer than feels comfortable," he told Entertainment Weekly
