This is not a piece of news I ever expected to see. At this week's upfronts for the Lifetime Network (yes, Lifetime has upfronts – I'm as surprised as you) the big hullabaloo surrounded
Project Runway's move from Bravo to the women's network Lifetime. However, had
Project Runway not made that move, the biggest news would have regarded Lifetime's newest soap opera, entitled
Trump Tower. Just because you may not believe me if I simply wrote it, here is the synopsis of Trump Tower from Lifetime president Susan Daniels: "Think
Desperate Housewives in Trump Tower with the Donald narrating, and you get the idea of what we're after."
The project has apparently been in the works for around four years and was originally set up for NBC. This was during the heyday of
Donald Trump's NBC reality series
The Apprentice. Now, with
The Celebrity Apprentice giving Donald Trump some newfound TV juice,
Trump Tower will hit Lifetime sometime in the near future – no premiere date has been confirmed.
This is one of those TV projects that just flabbergasts me. It's a series that sounds more like a
Saturday Night Live skit than anything that would ever actually reach the air. However, Donald Trump is a man to be reckoned with and
The Apprentice's success will always give Trump some modicum of TV clout.
Trump Tower could be a fun, melodramatic series, I suppose, and it mostly depends on the type of tone they decide to go with. If they go the ironic, tongue-in-cheek route, then I could see the series becoming a success. If they go the typical, uber-serious soap opera route, the results could be laughable. Mostly, the thought of Donald Trump narrating a soap opera about women living in his own building makes me giggle with delight. I might have to check out an episode just for that.
Will you watch Trump Tower?
