'The Amazing Race' Debate: Hair Extensions vs. One Million Dollars
Monday, April 30, 2012
We're one week away from the finale of The Amazing Race, so it's time to ask what people are willing to do for one million dollars. Or rather, what won't they do.
The 10th leg saw plenty of notable moments. Rachel and Dave claimed
their sixth first place finish, one away from the show's record. Art and
J.J. continued to make fun of everyone else. Rachel and Vanessa sort of
buried the hatchet (or at least mutually agreed to pretend the other
doesn't exist). And Bopper and Mark were sadly eliminated even after
getting the Fast Forward.
It's that Fast Forward that caused one of those great conundrums for The Amazing Race. Brendon and Rachel went to perform the Fast Forward, but when they learned it would involve shaving their heads (a la the famous Uchenna and Joyce Fast Forward), Rachel refused.
And, in that moment, balloons should've fallen from the sky because it marked the 1,000th reason I hate Rachel.
Art and J.J. may be obnoxious jerks, but that doesn't mean they're wrong. In fact, they were dead-on when the questioned why Brendon and Rachel were even on the Race if they weren't willing to do whatever it takes to win. It turned out not to matter, but that's not the point.
The point is that Rachel refused to shave her head because she paid $500 for hair extensions and has spent years trying to get her hair just right. The way she talked about it, you might think Rachel is Leonardo da Vinci and her hair is the Mona Lisa.
Sure, women value their hair, but this is a race for one million dollars. In that moment, Rachel forfeited her right to say that she's competitive or willing to do whatever it takes to win. Clearly she's not.
I know that Rachel and Brendon love painting themselves as the victims, and perhaps Art and J.J. and Vanessa and Ralph have been particularly mean to them, but that doesn't mean Rachel and Brendon deserve our sympathy. On Big Brother, everyone hated Rachel and Brendon as much as they do on The Amazing Race. If it happens on one season of a reality TV show, I might feel sorry for them. If it happened twice, I'd grow suspicious. But for three different seasons of reality TV with three different groups of people, Brendon and Rachel have been the object of disdain.
That's not a coincidence. There must obviously be something wrong with them for this many people to hate them. And it was all epitomized in this week's episode. Brendon and Rachel love to talk a big game about how competitive they are and how much they love to play the game. But when push comes to shove, Rachel values her $500 hair extensions over a million dollar game. That tells you everything you need to know about her.
