Hey So You Think You Can Dance fans! To better cover the technical
talents of season 6, we've brought on a guest columnist with decades of
dance experience. Kimberly C. Ellis is a performing artist, dancer,
poet and scholar
whose been dancing since seven years old. Kimberly, who is best known
as "Dr. Goddess" will be bringing your her dance-pertise in a weekly
column recapping and reviewing So You Think You Can Dance with an eye
on technique.By Kimberly C. Ellis (aka Dr. Goddess) The editors of
So You Think You Can Dance must have read my review last week because the show opens with flashbacks of Vegas Week and, you guessed it, Laurie Ann Gibson "motivating" the dancers, thus, my title. And she was right.
We begin showcasing the results with Cat Deely leading the first dancer beyond the waiting room, proclaiming, it's "time to put you out of your misery." Indeed!
The Contemporary DancersUnsurprisingly, Nathan Trasoras is in as our youngest contestant, followed by a string of rejected dancers and disappointing statements from the judges such as, "we're so sorry" and "you won't be moving on with us this time." The
So You Think You Can Dance editors play up the drama by showing us the bonds the dancers have made with one another and what sweet sorrow it is for them to part ways after such trials and . . . undulations!
As each dancer approached the stage, which turned into a runway of peppered spotlights to direct their path, video of his/her audition appeared on screen behind them. This proved helpful, as many of those who were cut were left nameless and with no reference to their performances. It was sad to see them go. They were all quite talented. Come back again, you all!
Announcing Kathryn McCormick's results proved to be the funniest. She has great self-awareness, as she announced to Cat that she would begin to cry and her voice would increase several octaves, as a result. And it did! The judges laughed hard at Kathryn and Nigel told her to "breathe...calm down". Kathryn's contemporary movements did, however, demonstrate strength, grace and fluidity. You are going to have to stop crying, though, Kathryn... you are now on another level.
It was exciting to see Channing Cooke entre' into the Top 20 because she is the soccer player with killer thighs and tremendous strength. She is so powerful, in fact, the judges are concerned that she needs to learn to work with a partner. I believe she can do it and giving her a chance while recognizing her potential to grow is what this show is all about---which is why I am so sad for Amber Jackson. I mean, really, judges. Cutting her was a huge, huge mistake. Amber's technique was fantastic. Her muscular legs would have given Channing a real run for her money, too. The only thing Amber was lacking was giving more "face" when she performed. But even the judges admitted she did a much better job during Vegas Week. So, why cut her now? Adding more "personality" to a dance routine is also something that comes when your heart is inspired. I can tell that Amber simply had not been challenged, enough, in years. The judges made an egregious error and, quite frankly, knowing that Ashleigh Di Lello (ballroom dancer and wife) made it into the
So You Think You Can Dance Top 20 only after Paula Van Oppen turned it down, makes this oversight an injustice. I'm sorry. Ashleigh is a wonderful dancer. But Amber was many times better and deserved the chance.
Nevertheless, cutie pie Ariana Debose as well as star quality, Ellenore Scott, soared into the Top, as well as "best friends", Mollee Gray and Noelle Marsh, whom we can tell will be somewhat annoying as the show goes on. Dancers, you may hold tight to your pairings but the fact is, you will soon part ways in this competition.
Last week, Billy Bell gave us the best solo during an audition and I wrote that he looked like he had gotten lost in the music and loved his performance. Tonight, William "Billy" Bell, 19 year old Julliard student, confessed his second solo was "the best time I've ever danced in my entire life." Can I call 'em or what? You know he's in.
The Hip HoppersRussell Ferguson is already a star, partially due to our low expectations that someone who arrived as a Krumper would be able to wow the judges with their versatile skills in ballroom, jazz and contemporary. Not only did he make history being the first Krumper to make it straight to Vegas, he is now the first Krumper to make it to the Top 20. That he cried upon winning after he showed us his skills further endears him to us (take notes, Legacy!). You go Russell!
Kevin Hunte, another one of my favorites, impressed the judges. He is a returning dancer who was determined to make it into the Top 20---and he did! I look forward to seeing more of him on
So You Think You Can Dance, with his neat cornrows and stunning smile.
And then there's Legacy. You know, the video playing behind Legacy actually increased his stature in my eyes. It is important to remember that Legacy is a great B-boy to watch. But my prediction is that Legacy will be one of the first to go, if he does not draw Hip Hop in the first week of actual eliminations or if he does not make gargantuan leaps and bounds in learning choreography of a different genre.
The TappersSo You Think You Can Dance made history, again, by showcasing tap dance this season. Bianca Revels, Philip Attmore and Peter Sabasino all hoofed their way into the Top 20. Way to go, judges! I cannot wait to see their solos! And special kudos to Bianca for coming back a third time!
The SurvivorsI do not know if Mollee Gray and Pauline Mata are just lucky or they just had excellent timing with their injuries. Both were able to showcase enough of their expertise for most of Vegas Week prior to getting injured, so they survived and made it into the Top 20. Of the two, Mollee will have to grow beyond, "dancing like a 14 to 15 year old", as Nigel critiqued. And Pauline? She has already won me over with her technique and personality. I look forward to her future performances.
The Sex Pot and the BallroomDo you know how hard I laughed when Mary told Ryan Di Lello, "those guns are gonna be movin' into the next round!?" That's right, Mr. Pectoralis Major bench-pressed his way into the Top 20; but please keep in mind, folks, Ryan is an excellent dancer who showed tremendous strength, flexibility and versatility!
Similarly, Karen Hauer (whose husband, Matthew, left last week) was a dancer who, "didn't put a foot wrong all week" and landed solid in the Top 20. But did you see the pain in Ryan's face when he thought Ashleigh had gotten cut? Wow. That is love. And no matter how far either of them get on the show, if they hold onto that, neither will ever really lose.
And there you have it, your Top 20. I am loving this amazing group of dancers and I cannot wait to see what they have to offer as they display their wondrous talents in front of millions of viewers!
Stay tuned and keep dancing!
