Now that a new season of
So You Think You Can Dance has officially gotten underway, it's time for some power rankings. We get things started today with the men and ranking them was a lot easier said than done. A few of them have hardly been shown at all while others have gotten more camera time than any contestant could ask for. The first week is full of uncertainties and it's hard to know what the votes are really based on. It could be talent, looks, personality, and so on. A dancer could luck out and pull a dance that is right in their comfort zone or stretch way beyond it and not deliver. Taking all of these factors into account, I ranked the top 10 males in order. Take a look, see what you think, and post your thoughts too!
10. Gev Manoukian
It’s not that I don’t think Gev is talented, because I do. I mean, the guy can breakdance on ice skates. That alone deserves props. The problem is that, early on, this becomes very much a popularity contest. Gev was placed in the top 20 over Brandon Bryant, a brilliant dancer. Though that’s not his fault, he could pay the price for it early on in the competition.
9. Joshua Allen
Joshua and Comfort struggled big time with ballroom in the Vegas round. To me, it didn’t seem strong enough to put them through and, at the very least, they should have had to dance for their lives. If Joshua can’t cut it when it comes to ballroom, he’ll be heading home a lot sooner than he hoped.
8. Chris Jarosz
The problem with Chris is that there’s hardly any footage of him dancing anywhere. Every other member of the top 10 has a YouTube audition video from the show that fans can watch. With very little camera time, Chris would have to make a huge impression or land a great partner this week to keep himself out of the bottom.
7. Thayne Jasperson
There are just too many contemporary dancers this season and the problem is that they all start to blend together. Thayne has yet to show anything that sets him apart from the pack. He’ll need to show some serious talent and charisma to keep fans remembering his name and picking up the phone for him.
6. Matt Dorame
Of this season’s contemporary dancers, Matt is one of my favorites. Technically, he’s a beautiful dancer and comes across as very creative. He’s also not bad on the eyes, which is a big factor that will keep the young girls dialing his number and screaming his name.
5. Mark Kanemura
Mark is definitely a dancer I’m looking forward to watching this season. He definitely stands apart from the crowd and is a very unique dancer. His solo to Bohemian Rhapsody in Vegas is probably the most memorable performance of the audition round. Not that I want him to land in the bottom and dance for his life, but I really can’t wait to see what this guy does next.
4. Will Wingfield
Will has a memorable story … and a lot of expectation to live up to. As a protégé of Debbie Allen’s, he was put through to the top 20 under one condition. Ms. Allen would have to step down as a judge for the entire season. This can only go two ways: crash and burn or soar to the top of the pack. I hope it’s the latter.
3. Jamie Bayard
Jamie Bayard is a swing champion who once danced with last season’s finalist, Lacey Schwimmer. Perhaps he’ll bring a little BF to the table. Benji Factor. If he has half the personality that Benji had in seaseon 2, Jamie should be hanging around for quite some time.
2. Marquis Cunningham
Not much was shown of Marquis this season but what was shown was nothing short of impressive. He has a Sabra Johnson-eque story. Both had only been dancing a few years before joining the show. Marquis started his training at 14 and now, is just 18 years old. Not only a great dancers, he’s got tricks in his back pocket too. He should be a contestant that makes the other male dancers nervous this season.
1. Twitch Boss
Twitch is clearly the most well known dancer this season. After making it all the way to the final round in Vegas last year, he lost his top 20 spot to Hok Konishi. Twitch is the total package: he’s talented, he’s well known, he’s entertaining, and he’s likeable. Unless he has some serious missteps, I think Twitch could go all the way to the finale without too much of a problem.
What will play the biggest factor in the votes this week?
