As we reported previously, there have been rumors going around that
Michael Rosenbaum,
Kristin Kreuk, and
Allison Mack may not return for
Smallville's eighth season. The contracts for all three actors are up at the end of this year, leaving them with the option to move on even if the CW would love to renegotiate their deals. Today, Michael Ausiello at TVGuide.com is confirming which of these actors will not be returning as series regulars next year. What could this mean for the future of the CW's most popular scripted series?

According to Ausiello, Michael Rosenbaum and Kristin Kreuk will not be returning to the series full time next year. However, both actors are open to doing limited engagements, and they are currently hashing out those details with the
Smallville producers. While you definitely won't be seeing Lex Luthor and Lana Lang in all 22 episodes of season 8, they won't completely disappear from the series.
As I wrote
in a previous article, I'm not exactly sad to see Lana Lang leave town. However, the majority of fans disagreed with me and wanted Lana to stay in Smallville for good. Over one thousand people voted in our poll about the issue, and 65 percent of them wanted Lana to stick around. Of course, Kreuk leaving doesn't mean that Clark and Lana can't end up together in the end. Though we know that Clark has to date Lois (
Erica Durance) later on in life, I still think the finale of
Smallville will leave "Clana" fans happy.
I think losing Michael Rosenbaum is a much bigger blow to the series. His friendship with Clark (
Tom Welling) and his increasingly evil ways are some of the most interesting parts of the series. I don't know how many episodes they'll land Rosenbaum for, but let's hope it's a decent amount. At least we'll still have Lionel Luthor (
John Glover) around to cause some trouble.
Though this shake up is bound to leave
Smallville fans distressed, it's an unfortunate reality in the TV business. The longer a show continues the more likely it is to lose cast members. The adventures of Clark Kent will continue on, with or without his first love and his arch nemesis.
Will this cast change affect how you watch Smallville?
