Last Friday was a record-breaking night for the CW, when the two-hour special "Absolute Justice" hit the screens. According to the reports, the Smallville feature revolving around the Justice Society of America really hit it big. It managed to attract around 2.8 million viewers, noted as the show's largest audience for season 9.
The arrival of the JSA wasn't just good for the series itself. Apparently, "Absolute Justice" was the best Friday showing that the network has had since 2008. That certainly is saying something for this superhero epic-sode.
According to
TV Guide, there's more to "Absolute Justice" than that. It managed to achieve the show's highest numbers in the adults 18-to-49 demographic, with a 1.2 rating. T he TV movie certainly exceeded expectations. There must really be something in hyping up an audience so much for a
Smallville episode.
Well, the CW seems to be investing in the show even more. Or, at least, its star. The source goes on to say that the network has greenlit a project produced by Tom Welling himself.
The Hollywood Reporter announced that they've agreed to work on a pilot produced by the
Smallville actor. They've also approved one from
Heroes' Hayden Panettiere, but we won't be discussing her here.
Anyway, Tom Welling has executive-produced a pilot for
Hellcats, which was written by Kevin Murphy. It's not exactly something we'd expect from someone who portrays Clark Kent, but this just goes to show you that he can still surprise us.
Hellcats is an ensemble show focusing on the world of competitive cheerleading. It's been described as a combination of
Election and
Bring It On. Well, it could work.
Now, whether or not Kryptonite had something to do with Tom Welling's decision to push through with this remains a mystery. Still, if he can bring that big an audience to the CW with
Smallville, then it's possible they'd let him do what he wants. We're not sure we'll stick around for
Hellcats despite its intriguing title, but we're certainly still rallying behind Clark.
