Kevin Smith Plus Smallville Equals...

kevin-smith.jpg Smallville has done much over the years to distance itself from its comic book roots, while at the same time keeping them, surreptitiously, on tap. With the pending release of Smallville the complete sixth season DVD, that line will finally be crossed for good. This time around, not only will the minds behind the show be providing commentary, the folks from DC comics will be contributing as well. The meeting of minds behind the man in tights and the boy in plaid is a comic/Smallville geeks dream come true, and it gets better.

The Smallville dvd set will no doubt be overflowing with the kind of extras Smallville fans have come to expect from the collections. Deleted scene, behind the scenes footage, and tons of insightful commentary from both the cast that breaths life into the characters and the people behind the scenes that craft the stories that have kept fans riveted all these years.

Add to that authentic DC comics writers Judd Winick, Brad Meltzer and Denny O'Neil, and you have something really special happening. All three have spent a lot of time on the very characters Smallville is based around. To make this geekplosion complete you need just one more thing: Kevin Smith.

Yes, the auteur of the X-Generation, comic geek, and prominent comic writer himself will be providing commentary to the Smallville set. Smith has contributed to the DC canon in some major ways, particularly with his work on Green Arrow. Personally, I’d be a little nervous about having Smith contrast and compare his work with that of Smallville’s writers, but then again, this is a guy who loves Degrassi.

The set will be released this summer. Video E.T.A is saying September, but a few sites are saying August which would be more in line with previous releases.
