Last Friday,
Rock of Love's Bret Michaels and his rock band, Poison, performed at the Mississippi Valley Fair grandstand, with an estimated 28, 700 people filling the venue. The massive turn-out broke the record previously held by such artists as Gretchen Wilson and Def Leppard, according to Fair general manager, Bob Fox.
Poison, whose last concert in the venue was back in 2002, was on stage for nearly 90 minutes, wowing the audience with their hit songs, including “Something to Believe In,” “Unskinny Bop,” “Talk Dirty to Me,” and “Nothin' But a Good Time.”
However, what most captured the audience's attention that night was the band's renditions of several cover songs, among which were the Romantics' “What I Like About You”, the Marshall Tucker Band's “Can't You See” and Loggins & Messina's “Your Mama Don't Dance.” All three songs, along with ten other covers, are featured on the band's seventh studio album, Poison'd, which was released on June 5.
Although Bret Michaels often takes center stage as the lead vocalist of the band, his bandmates got some time in the spotlight during last Friday's concert. Guitarist C.C. Deville sang one song and performed a guitar solo on “Georgia on My Mind,” while drummer Rikki Rocket had a prolonged drum solo, during which he was elevated high above the stage.
Bret Michaels, who stars in VH1's reality dating series,
Rock of Love, was so energized by the massive crowd that he reportedly invited himself and the band back for another concert next summer.
Along with the success his band is experiencing on its tour, which will conclude in early September, Michaels'
Rock of Love continues to be one of the highest-rated reality series on VH1. The show, which features the Poison frontman looking for the right girl he can share his rocker lifestyle with, airs Sunday nights at 9pm on the cable network.
