Prison Break: Amaury Nolasco Talks 'Street Kings'
Friday, April 18, 2008

For Prison Break fans looking to see a different side of Amaury Nolasco, they need to look no further than his current role in the movie, Street Kings, now in theaters. In the film, Nolasco plays Detective Cosmos Santos, who battles dangerous Los Angeles gang members after a fellow officer is murdered. The film also stars Keanu Reeves, Forest Whitaker, Chris Evans, and Hugh Laurie as Nolasco’s fellow police officers. Right before the release of the film, the stars participated in a press conference and Nolasco was able to speak extensively about his role in the film.

In the press conference, the actors were asked how they felt about the police before doing the film and after. Nolasco chose to field the question. “I've always had a problem with authority, but I have to say that I the utmost respect for the guys in blue, putting themselves on the line all the time,” he told the press. “I guess we don't realize it all the time either. We call 911 when we have petty little things. I guess we don't realize how they put themselves on the line for so much stuff that when we get a bad attitude coming from them, we were expecting them to be smiling and whatnot.”

In a film about police battling gang members, there is, without a doubt, many violent scenes to shoot. When asked if any of the actors were hurt during filming, Reeves asked Nolasco,”When we’re going in that car there was a lot of kicking, wasn't there? I kicked you in the chest, didn't I?” Nolasco responded, “There was me beating you with the rubber gun.” Reeves laughed and said,” Yeah, the hard rubber gun, and ripping his face off for a couple of days.”

The movie has received fair reviews at best. The New York Times said that it was “absurd if accidentally entertaining” but the San Francisco Chronicle called it “a tight, propulsive action thriller”. This week, it dropped from #2 at the box office to #7.
