John Hensley is a familiar face to television viewers as Matt, the somewhat dysfunctional and constantly conflicted son of
Nip/Tuck's two plastic surgeons, Sean McNamara (
Dylan Walsh) and Christian Troy (
Julian McMahon). As his character on the popular medical drama, Hensley has found himself in storylines that are often both tragically disturbed, yet inevitably laced with a fair amount of humor.
In his soon-to-be-released movie,
Teeth, the
Nip/Tuck co-star once again takes on a quirky and hysterical storyline, not far from some of the circumstances he's found himself in as his
Nip/Tuck character.
Looking back on
Nip/Tuck's maiden season, Matt's personal demons got to a point when he actually tried to perform his own circumcision. Several seasons later, he was the victim of a white supremacist, who held him captive, trained a gun on him and forced him to sever his transgender friend's penis.
In
Teeth, Hensley essays the role of Brad, another self-absorbed character with what proves to be a nearly fatal infatuation with his stepsister. The obsession becomes almost deadly when he discovers her rare condition of having a vagina that sprouts teeth whenever she feels threatened.
"There seems to be a connection here - oh, man, I don't want to get dismembered anymore," Hensley told the
Los Angeles Times in jest. "Maybe I need to have a talk with my agent."
"Brad is what would have happened if no one put the brakes on Matt," the actor added, citing the correlation between his
Teeth and
Nip/Tuck personas. "People might see Brad as this bad guy, but I never saw him as that. He's just a victim of circumstances. My initial intention was to have him be pure evil, but I really wanted to try and find the humanity in him. Matt is a victim of circumstances too, because he's grown up in this environment of highly dysfunctional people."
"Matt's been given more free rein this season, and the fact that he's a father has given him more dimension," Hensley continued. "He's arguably the one character on the show who goes through the most from season to season."
