The pilot season of New Amsterdam is coming to a close tonight following only eight episodes of the FOX drama series.  The show features Nikolaj Coster Waldau as John Amsterdam, a New York homicide detective who happens to be immortal due to an ancient spell that hinders his aging until he finds his one true love.

New Amsterdam was originally given a 13-episode order and was scheduled to premiere in the fall of 2007.  However, it was held as a mid-season replacement and began airing on March 4 instead. While the show initially fueled mixed reviews due to its familiar premise that echoes works such as the 2003 novel Forever and the 1992 vampire detective series Forever Knight, New Amsterdam still managed to attract a solid fan base, who are now hoping that the first season ender will deliver enough of a bang to get picked up again for a new season.

Tonight's episode called “Love Hurts” follows John, who is still recovering from his recent gunshot wound, and Eva as they investigate what looks to be the drowning death of a young woman.  They soon speculate that the victim's death may be linked to a series of robberies of wealthy men related to a dating service.

While working on the case, John recalls his days as a con man in the 1920s when he committed fraud and stole an expensive diamond pendant from his lover.  At the same time, John also questions if Sara is his true love who can finally convert him to a mortal.  However, he doesn't want to hurt her by keeping secrets about his past.  Thus, he decides to back away from their budding relationship.

New Amsterdam also stars Alexie Gilmore as Sara Dillane, Zuleikha Robinson as Eva Marquez, and Stephen Henderson as Omar, just to name a few.

Catch the season finale tonight at 9pm on FOX.
