Jordana Spiro Talks About Getting Cast on 'My Boys'

Jordana Spiro has appeared on a number of television series and movies.  But among all her acting gigs, she has immensely made herself known on the series My Boys as PJ Franklin, a 20-something professional sportswriter looking for love within her world, which is dominated by her group of male friends.

Although she plays a sports columnist for the Chicago cubs on My Boys, Spiro didn't really know anything about sports when she was cast for the lead role.

"My friends were cracking up that I got this part," Spiro told David Kronke of the Los Angeles News Group.  "I went to one of my first baseball games since I was a kid, a Dodgers game, and I asked what time 'the show' started."

In due course, however, Spiro has eventually developed a fondness for sports.  In fact, she claims that research for the show has made her into a sports geek.

“[Going to games is] not hard homework,” she said.

As PJ, Spiro has earned quite a following which is mostly due to the fact that she's normal and has a no-nonsense approach to relationships.  She also defies the typical female protagonist in Hollywood.

"Last year, I started to lose a little weight," Spiro recalled.  "And [series creator Betsy Thomas, who based the show on her own life as a sports fan who hosted poker games for her male pals] came up and said, 'I don't want this to be another skinny girl on TV.  I don't want you to go down that road.' She wanted her to be a grounded person, and I thought that was really cool, in light of all the Hollywood crap you deal with."

To catch more of Jordan Spiro, watch My Boys every Thursday at 9:30/8:30c on TBS.  The show also stars Jamie Kaler, Jim Gaffigan, Kellee Stewart, Kyle Howard, Michael Bunin, and Reid Scott.
