'Lost' Cleans Up at Saturn Awards
Thursday, June 26, 2008

Sometimes, life is a mystery.  The 34th Annual Saturn Awards were held earlier this week in Los Angeles.  The Saturn Awards honor the very best in fantasy and science fiction film and television as voted on by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films.  This week's awards honored the very best of 2007 and, not surprisingly, Lost cleaned up the television category.  What is surprising (well, earth-shattering, really) is that Jennifer Love-Hewitt won the Best Television Actress category for her work on Ghost Whisperer.  She beat out Evangeline Lilly from Lost, Lena Headey from Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Holly Hunter from Saving Grace, Kyra Sedgwick from The Closer and Anna Friel from Pushing Daisies.  Those other actresses are, unequivocally, better at acting than Love-Hewitt.  So, how did she win?  I have my theories (plus the results from the Awards ceremony).

Your Take

AnnaVanZ said: The fact that Moonlight and its cast were ignored tells me that this award is a big, steaming pile o' crap....

shmyshmy said: Oh please, Evangeline's only acting skill is taking her clothes off and climbing trees

The cynical point of view is that the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films is full of nerds who cannot resist the cleavage-y charms of Ms. Love-Hewitt.  It's what I like to call “The Boob Vote,” which is very common in some circles (especially high school student elections).  But, no! I will defend these ner...these prestigious Academy members.  They clearly see a subtlety in J-Love's performance that the rest of us heathens may not.  Not everyone can talk to ghosts convincingly, after all.

Anyway, Lost won in a number of categories.  Here are the notable winners from the TV portion of the event.

Best TV Series: Lost

Best Syndicated/Cable Series: Dexter

Best TV Presentation (which basically means special or mini-series): Family Guy's “Blue Harvest”

Best TV Actor: Matthew Fox, Lost

Best TV Actress: Chesty McChesterson, Ghost Whisperer

Best Supporting TV Actor: Michael Emerson, Lost (as if there was any doubt)

Best Supporting TV Actress: Tie between Elizabeth Mitchell, Lost and Summer Glau, Terminator

Lost deserves all the awards they can get.  Emerson should be given a Best Supporting TV Actor Ever award at some point.  In all seriousness, I think Evangeline Lilly should be recognized for the high-quality actress she is.  I have a hunch that she'll at least be nominated for an Emmy this year.
