Last Comic Standing: Bill Bellamy Shares the Secret Behind the Smiles
With the sixth season of NBC’s Last Comic Standing premiering a couple of weeks ago, we have host Bill Bellamy speaking about what else is up and coming in the wacky stand-up comedy-meets-reality series.

The 43-year-old Bellamy, who began his career in acting and stand-up comedy, familiarized the term “booty call,” and subsequently appeared on MTV as a VJ and host.  Later on, he appeared in films Fled, Love Jones, How to Be a Player and Any Given Sunday. Coming back to stand up comedy, he appeared Bill Bellamy’s Who’s Got Jokes and NBC’s Last Comic Standing.  Recently, he talked to TV Guide to reveal what is in store for the sixth season of the NBC series.

"It’s going to be an exhilarating, funny, super-duper show. The scope — the world wide search — is bigger [this year]," Bill Bellamy told TV Guide.  "It’s like the Super Bowl of comedy! I think people are going to get committed to the comedians."

Bellamy says that this season is far different from the past five, because audiences will get a more in-depth look into the lives of the comedians.

"Not only are you going to get an opportunity to see funny people, you’re going to know their story.  It’s a lot of fun," he says.  Moreover, he says that the search is more intense now that they have a good benchmark to define a great comic.

"Funny is top, but stage presence, charisma, and how you deliver your material all go into the matrix," he revealed.  "When you put it all together, and it clicks, you see the sparkle."

As for the wannabes, Bellamy says that it's hard to deal with.  He says that when it comes to hecklers, "You kill them.  You annihilate them and don’t give them a chance to breathe.  When you’re on that stage, it’s your room. Y ou got to let them know that — pow!"

Nonetheless, Bellamy promises another season of funny antics and smart jokes.  Moreover, he says that there will be special guests on the show, such as "French Stewart, Bobby Schirrpa, Richard Belzer — it’s really good to bring in as talent scouts people who have been on shows and know funny. Comedy is subjective."

As for those fans who are still wondering about how the term "booty call" came about, Bellany offers this explanation: "Mike Tyson had invited a girl to his hotel room back in the day, and I was just wondering why she thought he’d invited her up there.  She thought he was such a gentleman, which I thought was hilarious.  I thought, 'You know he wants some booty,' so I said that was a 'booty call.'  It just came to me, and it stuck."

Catch Bill Bellamy and the rest of the comic hopefuls on NBC's Last Comic Standing on Thursdays at 9:30pm.
