Nine-year-old Alex, who hails from Reno, Nevada, has read Al Gore's The Inconvenient Truth and admires the author's commitment for a worthy cause. A member of Davidson Young Scholars Program, he listens to music by Peter, Paul, and Mary, Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark, The Cars and Enya. He enjoys reading Calvin and Hobbes comics and watching Mythbusters, Planet Earth, Funniest Home Videos and the Food and Travel Channels. An aspiring linguist, chemist, geographer, neuroscientist or teacher, Alex believes that global warming is one of the world's biggest problems today.

Alex is one of 40 youth aged 8 to 15 to participate in CBS' Kid Nation, a reality show which takes place in Bonanza City, New Mexico. There, the children are left to reconstruct a once thriving mining town which is now deserted. They are tasked to govern their small society and build their new world.
