Gerald McRaney as Mayor Johnston Green

Johnston Jacob Green, Sr. from Jericho is played by Gerald McRaney. As the mayor, Johnston served the town of Jericho, Kansas for 25 years. The husband of Gail and father to Jake, he has a strained relationship with his son who returned to Jericho only to collect his inheritance from his deceased grandfather. Apparently, Johnston was guilty of neglecting his family more than a few times, as he was busy serving the town. Among his two songs, Eric and Jake, Johnston had always favored Eric, who later was able to give him a grandchild. He only gained respect for Jake when Jake proved himself to be a worthy man as his father.

A member of the U.S. Army Rangers, he led the effort to prepare for the worst as a nuclear bomb exploded in Denver, Colorado. His experience in the Army had honed him to become the good leader that the Jericho townspeople grew to recognize as a man who was always there during times of crisis. However, several men, including his political rival Gray Anderson, doubted his abilities. Anderson eventually won against him in a recall election, which took place in the wake of Gracie the grocer's murder.

During an evacuation to a fallout shelter, Gail found her husband unconscious in his office. He was later treated at the shelter, thus regaining consciousness. They later discovered that the cause of his collapse was a bad case of flu. Aside from his failing health, he has also experienced severe septic shock, after which Jake drove out of the city to find his father's medication. Johnston also once almost died from an illness due to exhaustion, and this forced him to slow down a little bit.

Johnston Green met demise when New Bern attacked Jericho, as he was killed by a gunshot wound.
