Lists are fun. This has been proved scientifically. So, really, don't try to argue about it.
Arguing is, in fact, the reason why lists are so popular. Although totally and completely arbitrary in nature, lists present the reader with an easy template for an argument. Whether that argument comes in the form of sheer outrage over the fact that some jerk over at BuddyTV didn't include
Betty Suarez in his list of most desirable female characters on TV or in the form of explicit admiration for that genius over at BuddyTV and his incredible arbitrary ranking skills, the point remains the same: lists are good discussion starters and, as stated earlier, fun.
With this in mind, we will begin publishing a weekly top ten list.
First up, as noted in the title, is our “Top Ten Most Desirable Female Characters on TVâ€
(Will I do a “Most Desirable Male Characters on TV?†Probably not, because, you know, that's not really my bag. Although, if I were to do it, I don't see any possible scenario in which
Jack Bauer doesn't take the top spot.)
Today's list may seem self-explanatory, but we need to make a few very clear rules about the selection process.
- We are looking at a hypothetical situation in which you could become romantically involved with a TV character. Who would be your first pick?
- The term “Most Desirable†takes everything into account: looks, personality, living situation, past, future prospects, occupation, etc.
- We're talking about the characters, not the actresses. Evangeline Lilly would have easily made the list, but her character, Kate, doesn't. Why? Because she lives on a deserted island and is currently imprisoned. And she's an outlaw.
- The list presupposes this scenario: if the character in question currently has a significant other on their show, she immediately dumps him and becomes available to you. However, the history of their relationship will remain intact.
- I don't care how old the actress is, if the character is in High School, she's off-limits
