Like her counterparts Kim Zolciak and Bethenny Frankel, both of whom got their own wedding-centric spinoffs, Kandi Burruss is in a hurry to tie the knot. While Frankel wanted to get her nuptials out of the way before her water broke, and Zolciak was determined to make sure the stars were aligned in her favor, Burruss wants a date that will be impossible to forget, 4/04/14. This only gives her five weeks to plan the wedding.Kandi's Wedding
picks up not long after the RHOA
finale, and the triumphant premiere of Kandi's musical A Mother's Love
. Now this "housewife" is eager to get started on her next big project, a wedding. And while Kandi appears pretty grounded, like any first-time bride, she's planning a lavish affair. The usually frugal Burruss, with some help from fiance Todd, plans to spare no expense, except when it comes to hiring a wedding planner. Why pay a professional when she can have her best friend/assistant/bridesmaid, Carmon, manager Don Juan, and Production Coordinator Johnnie do the job?
Carmon has some additional concerns given that the last time she was in Kandi's mother's presence the woman went after her like a crazed guest on a bad TV talk show. Kandi continues to hope for the best, but she should familiarize herself with the saying "Wish in one hand, shit in the other. See which one gets filled first."
As fans of RHOA
know, Kandi's family, particularly her mother, are not happy to see the mini-mogul walk down the aisle with a lowly TV producer. Despite "Momma Joyce's" objections, this wedding is happening whether she likes it or not, and she most definitely does not. Not only does she still question Todd's intentions, she's making some very nasty accusations about his mother and deceased father. Apparently, you can get on Momma Joyce's bad side even if you're six feet under.
Momma Joyce's daughter has to bear the brunt of her mother's biting comments just as much as anyone else. Kandi pays Joyce a visit, and not only has to listen to her mother make delusional and disparaging accusations regarding Todd's parents, but also has to endure multiple comments about her weight (She's a size 6).
Kandi may have hoped that A Mother's Love
would have made Joyce see the error of her ways, but that hasn't been the case. Momma Joyce feels like Todd and his mother are encroaching on her territory figuratively and literally. The fact that Kandi's mther-in-law to be treats her with a respect that is lacking between Todd and Joyce is obviously going to make her a more frequent and welcome visitor in the couple's home.
Unlike Momma Joyce, a few members of Kandi's family have started to come around such as Kandi's Aunt Bertha and Aunt Nora (Joyce's sisters), both of whom were present at the bridal boutique throwdown fans saw during this past season of RHOA
. Nora is genuinely contrite regarding her behavior, and both she and Bertha are determined to move forward with positive attitudes. Along with Kandi's cousin and bridesmaid "Weenie," they hope to bring Momma Joyce around.
Because Bravo can't resist a crossover, a familiar face from the network's Married to Medicine
promises to play an integral role in Kandi's dream day. Atlanta-based designer Reco Chapple, will be designing the bride's and bridesmaids' gowns, free of charge. He can afford to be generous given the deluge of free press he's been getting lately.
All of the wedding stuff aside, the show provides Burruss' fans with a much more in- depth look at the singer/songwriter/entrepreneur's personal life. Unlike previous spinoffs with other brides-to-be, Kandi's Wedding
explores the difficulties surrounding the blending of two families. It's not always as idyllic as Father of the Bride
would have you believe. Like Carmon says, "Weddings definitely bring out the worst in people."
Kandi also has a tight-knit group of friends, many of whom she's known for the better part of her life, some of whom are also on her payroll. This creates some friction between Carmon and Todd since he believes that friendship and business should be mutually exclusive. Kandi's besties have their own problems and concerns regarding the wedding, and none are shy about voicing them. Keep an eye out for Phaedra who is a member of the wedding party. The self-proclaimed southern belle is also bound to have some strong opinions, especially when it comes to the prenuptial agreement.Kandi's Wedding
has all the makings of a Tyler Perry production, minus a comedic figure in drag. And while it may be a long, tough road to get there, fans already know Kandi and Todd get some sort of happily-ever-after, even if it's not of the fairytale variety.
