These days, parents have to stay on top of who their kids are watching and idolizing. A few years ago, it seemed okay to let our children listen to a Britney Spears song or two. These days, we have to change the channel at the mere mention of her name. The same can be said for Paris Hilton, Nicole Ritchie, Lindsay Lohan, and so on. Then, there's the glimmering ray of hope,
Hannah Montana star
Miley Cyrus, a girl who's just acting her age and it's okay. Cyrus and her dad
Billy Ray, sat down for their first interview together since she shot to fame, with ABC's Deborah Roberts this weekend.
In the interview, Billy Ray talked about his own rise to fame and the backlash he received from the media. He decided to step out of the spotlight and focus on his family. Years later, when he decided to mount a comeback, his young daughter Miley wanted in on the action. Yet, it took some time for the Cyrus family to decide if thrusting Miley into the spotlight was such a good idea.
The move ended up being one of the best decisions the Cyrus family ever made. Not only is
Hannah Montana larger than life, Miley has managed to remain a regular kid and a positive role model to her peers. Once she hit it big, Billy Ray realized he needed to pull back a little. He describes the way he felt in a new song, "Ready, Set, Go". "It's about that moment in every parent's life where you realize that your child has grown up, and you're at that crossroads where you gotta' let 'em go," he told 20/20.
The success of the Cyrus family has been on a roll for quite some time. The show has broken many cable ratings records, Billy Ray participated in last season's
Dancing With The Stars, recently released a new album and toured, and Miley is also embarking on a sold out tour.
