Grey's Anatomy served up a ton of heavy emotional stuff this week. Between Bello's exit, April saving the baby, Richard losing his long time sponsor and Owen deciding to adopt, it was tough stuff this week. Not for the faint of heart, for sure. However, the absolute saddest and sweetest moment was a quiet interaction between Alex and Jo. It got me, folks.

Grey's Anatomy Recap: A Dream Becomes a Nightmare>>>

Jo and Alex have traveled a long, complicated road to become the couple we see on our screens. Who would have thought that Jo and Alex would be the healthiest, most well-adjusted couple on the show?

"Beautiful Dreamers" brought a lot of tears, but the absolute most emotional moment came after Alex's favorite patient leaves the hospital and he turns to Jo to comfort him. As he sits dejectedly on an empty bed, Jo delivers the most powerful lines of dialogue I've seen between the two.

She tells Karev, "I really want to have kids with you." Tears immediately spring to my eyes as Alex turns to her, gratefully and lovingly. She follows up with another gut punch, saying, "If it's okay, I really want to take your last name. I've never had the last name of someone who loves me."

Ouch. This moment is so impactful because it's a symbol of all the hard and tragic things these two have had to overcome. Alex is possibly the first person to ever treat Jo with tenderness and compassion. And Jo is probably the first woman who is not going to leave him in a cruel and ultimately damaging way (fingers crossed.)

Grey's, once again, offers audiences the moments to simultaneously cry happy and sad tears. I've never rooted for a couple so hard, and this moment proves they are the star duo of the series. Give us far less Jackson/Maggie and more, more, more Jo/Alex. They are the heart of the show, and this tiny moment proves it.
