It has already been announced that
Kevin McKidd, formerly of
Journeyman, will be making hearts go pitter-patter on
Grey's Anatomy. He'll be playing a military doctor, Major Owen Hunt, who'll catch the eye of our favorite robotic resident, Cristina Yang (
Sandra Oh).
In more
Grey's Anatomy casting news, EW's Michael Ausiello reported last week that
Janina Gavankar, recently of
The L Word, will be joining the cast of
Grey's Anatomy as an intern, and Brandon Scott (
Cold Case) will also be checking into Seattle Grace Hospital as a junior McDreamy.
So far, Ausiello's informants on the
Grey's Anatomy front can't confirm how large these three roles will be in the new season. Right now, all three are just recurring players; however, as we reported last week, Ausiello is pretty confident that Shonda Rhimes will be promoting Kevin McKidd to series regular by season's end. If Rhimes is as pleased with Javankar's and Scott's performances, perhaps they too will get a mention in the opening credits.
Personally, I would like to see some fresh blood on
Grey's Anatomy but not if it means that the cast gets overly bloated. This ensemble show already started out with a huge cast, and even with the departures of
Kate Walsh and
Isaiah Washington, there are still 12 other actors in the main cast. There's
Ellen Pompeo, Sandra Oh,
Katherine Heigl,
Justin Chambers,
T.R. Knight,
Chyler Leigh,
Chandra Wilson,
Sara Ramirez,
James Pickens Jr.,
Patrick Dempsey,
Eric Dane and
Brooke Smith. Twelve! That's enormous!
I fear that if we were to add even more characters to the fabric, then the impact of each one will be diluted. I always felt that Sara Ramirez's Dr. Callie Torres has gotten the short end of the stick, storyline-wise. McSteamy has the potential for being more than just a womanizer – indeed, he started to make some changes at the end of last season in this regard – but he'll need screen time to prove it. Chyler Leigh, also, has been a delightful addition to the cast. Her character, Lexie Grey, Meredith's younger half-sister, has the very Rhimes-esque habit of blurting out her thoughts in haphazard fashion, but when she does, she's usually right. And how could I forget Bailey? Really, everyone should have more Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) in their lives.
Of course, there are some people in the cast whose screen time should be downsized. I find Erica Hahn (Brooke Smith) intensely boring, and actually, I wouldn't miss Derek Shepherd if he took a year-long sabbatical to go build a house somewhere.
