Grey's Anatomy: Episode 5.15 "Before and After" Recap (Page 2/4)
There are a couple of excruciating scenes in these two-hours in which the old med school gang sing songs that Derek apparently wrote way back when. This is news to me. Have we known that he used to sing and play the guitar? Maybe not, because Meredith didn't know about it either. You know what, though? They are not very good at singing, so maybe they should just stop. Derek interrupts some bedside musical merrymaking with the bad news that there is no way he can operate on Archer's brain without rupturing any of the eight cysts.

Privately, Addison tells Derek that after the divorce, she had to figuratively shrink him down to the size of a tiny, petty man such that she might fit him into a tiny box, but right now, she needs him to unshrink and be a god and fix her brother.

Sam (Taye Diggs) decides to leave his Private Practice and follow the gang up to Seattle. He isn't quite sure why he is here, at the bedside of his ex-wife's current boyfriend, and he can't explain himself when Bailey interrogates him about it.

Meredith and Cristina, who are besties once again, briefly exchange some of the emotional turmoil each is going through, Meredith about not really knowing who Derek is, and Cristina about the revelation that Major McHottie had a fiancée, who is here because her father is a patient at the hospital.

Major McHottie finds Cristina and tells her that she can ask him about his engagement, but she has no interest in any of that. She keeps things strictly professional between them. Unfortunately, Blondie happens to be in the hallway and sees him. The backstory is that she believed him to be in Iraq this whole time, and she had been praying every night for his continued survival. He hasn't even told his mother that he is back in the States. Blondie tearfully gives him a hug, but he bristles at her touch.

Addison goes to the hospital chapel, while all of her friends stand around in the doorway trying to figure out what she's doing. In an exasperated voice, Addison yells, "I can hear you guys! I'm trying to pray but I don't know how because I'm a WASP and only go to church on Christmas." Callie (Sara Ramirez), happy to have her best platonic gal pal back in Seattle, jumps in to talk to her. In a great little scene, Callie tells Addison about her recent conversion to sapphism by praying to God about how she doesn't know what to do about the cute, perky and incredibly hot peds surgeon whom she kissed. Way to preserve the sanctity of prayer, eh? But it was still a really cute scene.
