For quite some time leading up to the Grey’s Anatomy season 4 finale, fans had been wondering if either Callie Torres or Erica Hahn were actually lesbians. There were the looks, the laughs, the way they were drawn to each other, like part of some exclusive club. Erica had said that Callie was beautiful while Callie tensed up every time Erica was in her presence. Finally, on the May 22 finale, the two kissed – and not just for show. They seem to be a bona fide Seattle Grace couple now. Grey’s creator Shonda Rhimes recently weighed in on the latest work romance to Entertainment Weekly and if the two will be an item in season 5.

“Callie and Erica have an undeniable chemistry and watching the story unfold is something the writers are looking forward to,” Rhimes said. She confirmed the two will be sharing many steamy scenes together in the upcoming season. “I wanted to illuminate their relationship in the same way we do all relationships on the show — it will be ¬funny, sweet, honest, and a little bit dirty.”

Brooke Smith, who plays Erica Hahn, said that her character was not a lesbian from the very beginning. She only started coming out of the closet very recently, after meeting Callie. "Earlier this season, we felt it was too obvious that a strong, powerful woman would be a lesbian," Smith said. "In fact, Dr. Hahn decided she wasn't going to have a relationship at work, though clearly she came to the wrong hospital."

As for whether or not Smith is happy with the decision to make Hahn and Torres an item, fans can rest assured that she’s on board. "Sara Ramirez is not a bad choice. She's pretty hot!" she said. "Why not? I'm game." Whether or not Callie and Erica can survive together in a relationship that’s new to both of them, and continue a professional relationship, is a storyline that will have to play out when season 5 returns this fall.
