The CW is that embarrassing step-cousin of a network that doesn't really care about world events, but instead pumps its young viewers' minds full of visions of Kevin Federline acting like a wannabe rock star on
One Tree Hill. The CW's superficiality has never been more apparent than it will be tonight: while the rest of television (even FOX!) will be focusing on the state of our union, the CW will be taking you into the world of the ultra-rich and privileged with a re-airing of the pilot episode of
Gossip Girl. I guess, if you're only into clothes and boys and drugs and sex like Serena van der Woodsen (
Blake Lively) and Blair Waldorf (
Leighton Meester), you really wouldn't give a hoot about interest rates or the sub-prime lending crisis, right? Those are things they pay people to worry about for them so that they won't get frown lines.
Fortunately for those of us on the West Coast, the State of the Union address will be over before the prime-time lineup starts, so we can still feel informed and superficial at the same time. If I lived on the East Coast, I'd really have a hard time deciding which to watch—
Gossip Girl's pull is
that strong. Thank goodness for DVRs! (OK, OK, I admit it: I am a
little superficial.)
Tonight's special re-broadcasting, entitled "
Gossip Girl Revealed", will run 91 minutes, beginning at 8pm. Interspersed within the pilot episode will be bonus features, including cast interviews and commentary, and deleted scenes. There will also be profiles of the
Gossip Girl characters, as well as information about the fashions and music used on the show for all those aspiring to be the next "it" girl or guy.
In this day and age of TV on DVD, it makes sense for the CW to be promoting its most promising freshman show with behind-the-scenes clips and interviews. I know for sure that I am waiting with bated breath for the gem of a season of
Gossip Girl on DVD.
Also, check this out:
Penn Badgley who plays
Gossip Girl's resident idealist dreamboat Dan Humphrey, is a fan of BuddyTV. I bet he would be watching the State of the Union tonight, though.
