Network: FOX
Premiere: Tuesday, September 9, 9pm
Cast: Anna Torv, John Noble, Joshua Jackson, Lance Reddick
Premise: An FBI agent (Anna Torv), an institutionalized genius scientist (John Noble) and his rebellious son (Joshua Jackson) team up to investigate the use of “fringe science.” On
Fringe, anything is possible: re-animation, invisibility, teleportation. It's all on the table.
J.J. Abrams, as any fan of television knows, has quite the track record.
Felicity, Alias, Lost...now
Fringe. It's both a burden and an advantage to have to follow-up the massive success of
Lost. While expectations are going to be sky-high, Abrams' clout allows him to bring his specific vision to the small screen with little interference from the networks.
Fringe was one of the most expensive pilots ever shot, and FOX was happy to fast track the series into production.
Having seen the two-hour pilot, I can say that
Fringe will have an audience. Those expecting the greatness of the
Alias or
Lost pilot might leave somewhat disappointed – while
Fringe is engrossing, it can also be slow and uneven at times. The middle third is sluggish, but the beginning and the end are quite good, and it left me excited for the subsequent episodes.
FOX is going to give
Fringe every chance to succeed and that starts with the time slot. Out of all the new shows gracing prime time television this upcoming season,
Fringe has secured the most desirable time slot – after mega-hit
House, and against mediocre competition.
Fringe will have ratings success simply be default.
Fans of Abrams expecting a new
Lost should be prepared for a much more procedural based series. While there will be an over-arching mythology,
Fringe is more in the vein of
The X-Files.
