Peri Gilpin was born Peri Kay Oldham on May 27, 1961 in Waco, but she grew up in Dallas, Texas. She took up acting at the Dallas Theater Center and pursued further related studies at the University of Texas and the British-American Academy in London. She became a make-up artist upon returning to the U.S. but decided to follow her thespian calling and apprenticed with the Williamstown Theater Festival in Massachusetts. She eventually landed a part on the show, Wings, from the creators of the sitcom, Frasier, where she got to work with the late producer, Roz Doyle, after whom they named her character.

Roz Doyle, played by Peri Gilpin on Frasier, is Frasier Crane’s show producer at the KACL radio station. Over the years, she has become more than his colleague and has become a close and valued friend to the Crane family. She has a daughter, Alice May Doyle, from a brief fling with Rick, a waiter at the café she and the Crane brothers often go to.
