'Dancing with the Stars' Semi-Finals Predictions: Who Will Make the Finals?

This is a tough one to call. Every single Dancing with the Stars season 14 semi-finalist arguably deserved a shot at the Mirror Ball. So who will get cut?

Will Bad Backs Determine the Finale?

As the remaining pairs go into the Dancing with the Stars season 14 finale, not one but two dancers may be felled by back injuries. Katherine Jenkins pulled her back at the end of her samba performance last night, while Derek Hough had back problems during rehearsals. The pro dancer was apparently close to sitting out the semi-finals before deciding to go on.

If either or both of these dancers are too injured to continue, that throws everything off. Predictions don't mean a thing when front-runners can't dance.

On the other hand, they're probably OK. Last night, Katherine Jenkins tweeted that doctors had diagnosed her with a reflectorical spasm of the lower back. This morning, she followed up:

"Morning all... Thanks for your tweets of support & concern. The good news is that I'm feeling better, just a little sore. #OnwardsAndUpwards"

Will the Scores Determine the Finale?

Prior to the Dancing with the Stars season 14 semi-finals, I predicted that the choice for the finale would be made by the scores.

Maybe not.

Other than a four-way tie, you can't get scores much closer than what we saw in the semi-final dances. Each dancer was only one point away from another dancer, giving a spread of only four points between first and last place.

The Scores

  1. Maria Menounos and Derek Hough: 59 points
  2. William Levy and Cheryl Burke: 58 points
  3. Donald Driver and Peta Murgatroyd: 57 points
  4. Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas: 56 points

When you consider that Katherine and Mark only ended up in the bottom because of a last-second injury, these scores seem even closer.

Will Votes Determine the Finale?
Part of the reason I picked scores as the determining factor is the relative popularity of each star. Honestly, I can't imagine there's much of a difference between them. None of these people were household names before Dancing with the Stars. All of them come across as pleasant, likable people. None of them have been in the bottom two. Ever.

Last night's performances could skew things, of course. Katherine's injury might bring sympathy votes to her aid. I personally wonder if Donald's drug-filled backstory might not have alienated some viewers -- although others might be sympathetic to his triumph over a rough beginning. William and Maria gave excellent performances, but it's hard to tell if either dancer clicked with viewers.

If I Had to Choose...
Unfortunately, I do have to pick someone to get cut. That's my job and all. So, with no expectation for getting this right and a full admission that I could be completely insane, here are some picks for the Dancing with the Stars season 14 semi-final results.

Most Likely to Go: Donald Driver and Peta Murgatroyd
If Not Them: Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas
Or Maybe: Maria Menounos and Derek Hough
But Probably Not: William Levy and Cheryl Burke (would the screamers allow it?)
