Dancing with the Stars 8: Top 8 Performance Live Thoughts (Page 1/4)
It's the sixth week of competition on Dancing with the Stars, and there are only eight couples left on the show.  Tonight, the couples will either be performing a jive or a rumba, two very difficult styles.  The jumping jive requires a lot of strength and stamina and is very fast-paced requiring lots of charisma and energy.  The rumba is all about slow, sensual seduction, but it also requires a lot of strength since you have to be in complete control of your movements at all times.  Any little mistake will be visible, but you also have to worry about the romantic chemistry between the partners.

Either way, it should make for a very entertaining performance show tonight.  As we saw last week when David Alan Grier was kicked off, Dancing with the Stars is not just about who can dance the best.  The stars have to connect with the audience as well.

I'll do my best to keep you entertained throughout the night.  Stay with me!

Live!  From Hollywood!  This is Dancing with the Stars!

It's the half-way point in the competition.  This is the point in the season when things really begin to gel for the celebrities, or when injuries and exhaustion set in.  It'll be interesting.  Ugh!  I love Chelsie Hightower, but why is she wearing an American flag on her torso?

Ty Murray and Chelsie Hightower - Jive

Last week, Ty's paso doble was rigid and robotic, but this week, they have to kick up into a higher gear with the jive.  Chelsie does her best by loosening Ty up in rehearsal.  She brings a hula hoop to loosen his hips, and a mini trampoline to work on the jumps for the jive.  Ty looks ridiculous hula hooping, that's for sure.

Tonight, Ty is wearing a big ol' cowboy hat and a huge belt buckle.  I'm really surprised that we haven't seen more cowboy hats on him this season.  Chelsie's outfit is adorable, with her short skirt and boots, EXCEPT for the American flag business.  Their jive looks more like country line dance than a jive, and Ty is off beat at times.  But we'll see what the judges have to say about this one.

Starting with Len, Len says that Ty is charming, but he always looks bewildered.  He likes that Ty always gives everything he has, but the performance wasn't good.  Bruno Tonioli says that the line dance bits were OK, but once the jive started it was all wrong.  Carrie Ann Inaba says that he is more suited to the foxtrot or the lindy hop than the jive.  She didn't like this jive, but she still thinks he's cute.

The scores:
Carrie Ann: 6
Len: 6
Bruno: 6
Total: 18 out of 30

Shawn Johnson and Mark Ballas - Rumba

Shawn is nervous about the romantic rumba because she doesn't quite know how to make it sexy and intimate.  Mark Ballas is super-cute teaching her how to be sexy.  Awww, and because she was missing her prom this year, he decorates the rehearsal studio a high school gym during prom night.  So sweet!

Tonight, I'm so glad that Shawn doesn't have the horrendous ruffles and weird curled hair that she had last week.  She looks gorgeous, and I love her smokey eye makeup.  She is doing well being romantic with the rumba, but she seems a bit on the mechanical side, rather than really hot and steamy.  But technically, she is as proficient as always, especially with a cool spin move at the very end of the performance.  They get a standing ovation, the first one of the evening.

Bruno calls it "the innocent side of romance" but sometimes he can see "a hint of the devil."  Carrie Ann saw the discomfort in Shawn's eyes at the beginning of the routine, since this rumba is such a difficult style, but Shawn and Mark improved in the second half.  Len says that their rumba was not too hot and not too cold, but just right.  It was a very age-appropriate routine.

The scores:
Carrie Ann: 8
Len: 9
Bruno: 9
Total: 26 out of 30
