Ted Danson is an award-winning American actor born on December 29, 1947 in San Diego, California. He won an Emmy Award for his work on the comedy series Cheers, as well as Golden Globe Awards for Cheers and the miniseries Something About Amelia. The son of an archaeologist and an anthropologist, he has both British and Irish ancestry. During his years at Kent School, he was recognized as a basketball star athlete, and he later on went to earn a bachelor’s degree from the Carnegie Institute of Technology. Danson is a veteran of numerous television productions such as Laverne and Shirley, Gulliver’s Travels, and Magnum, P.I.
Sam Malone is portrayed by Ted Danson in the classic NBC television sitcom Cheers. Sam is the owner of the Cheers bar, and a former pitcher for the Boston Red Sox. He was on the way to becoming a famed athlete, but it was derailed by his alcoholism. He was also lauded before for his ability to remain calm under intense pressure during games, and is generally said to have been an outstanding player. Sam is also known to be a womanizer, becoming romantically involved with Diane and Rebecca. He is depicted as a successfully recovering alcoholic, having bought the bar and operating it to prove his triumph and sobriety.
