Following two seasons working on
Criminal Minds as criminal profiler Jason Gideon,
Mandy Patinkin left the show in 2007 due to creative differences. Since then, he has graced the stage with his performances, opting to focus more on comedy and musicals. In fact, he recently appeared in Reno, Nevada's Pioneer Center for Performing Arts, where he ended his little tour before heading back to the theater. Most recently, it was announced that Patinkin will be taking on a Shakespearean role in his next project.
Mandy Patinkin will be playing Prospero in William Shakespeare's
The Tempest, which will be shown at the Classic Stage Company beginning Thursday, September 3.
The 55-year-old former
Criminal Minds star debuted in 1980 on Broadway with Andrew Lloyd Weber's Evita, playing Che. He later won his first Tony Award for the role, and four years later was again recognized with a nomination for his starring role in the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical, Sunday in the Park with George. In 1991, he headed back to Broadway with the Tony Award-winning musical,
The Secret Garden. Six years later, he held a one-man concert aptly titled Mandy Patinkin in Concert, followed by numerous solo concerts and stage musicals.
In 1995, Patinkin headed to the television screen with a role in the CBS drama,
Chicago Hope, for which he won an Emmy Award. His other notable television roles include that in Showtime's
Dead Like Me and CBS'
Criminal Minds. Heading back to the stage, Patinkin is ready to take on
The Tempest, where he stars alongside Craig Baldwin, Yusef Bulos, Angel Desai, Karl Kenzler and Nana Mensah, among others.
The Tempest is directed by Brian Kulick and Jessica R. Jenen, with scenic design provided by Jian Jung, costumes by Oana Botez-Ban and lighting by Brian H. Scott.
