The Covert Affairs Season 5 premiere started with a surprise, continued with a mystery (or two or three or four) and ended with a terrible bang. Well, one thing's for sure, Annie is back with a vengeance.

The Good Old Days

After killing Henry, Annie returned after four months off the radar. The first thing she did, of course, was to call Auggie and ask him to meet up. But I bet the Auggie/Annie shippers out there were completely disappointed when she asked him to go back to being just her handler. It seems she learned from her last four years on the job and decided that she could no longer do her work if she had any personal attachments. She wanted to go back to the good old days when they were just agent and handler.

From the beginning, I loved Annie and Auggie in their agent and handler roles. He was always that voice on the other end of the line that she could trust. Do I wish they could be together? Absolutely, but I'll take whatever kind of Annie and Auggie connection I can get.

Is There a Doctor in the House?

Auggie knew right away that Annie wasn't telling the truth when she said she had simply been sitting on a beach sipping margaritas for the past four months. That fact became evident when she was immediately put on an assignment. First she had to help out an old friend of Auggie's when Khalid was spotted in Chicago and she went there to help out.

They found Khalid but he had to be taken out when he threatened the life of a maid. He was agitated and seemed surprised that Annie didn't know why he was in the states. From Khalid, Annie's mission then took her to a man named Borz Altan. When she has to chase him down by foot a very unusual thing happens: She loses her breath and nearly passes out. After giving herself a shot, she calls a doctor using a pseudonym and says she's had an "episode."

Wait. What?? What is going on with Annie? Is she sick? Has she been injured? The episode never answers those questions and instead Annie goes back to work. They track down Altan's brother and, fearing a terrorist attack, take him to their secret building. Turns out that's exactly what the Altans wanted. The brother was a bomb and everyone, including Auggie's old buddy (I had a feeling that guy's days' were numbered) is killed. Only Annie is saved.

Uneasy Allies

Back at the DPD, Joan returned from maternity leave a week early but wasn't happy when she wasn't given back her old job. Calder is still interim DCS and Joan is back as head of DPD. I believed Calder when he said he hadn't been trying to manipulate the situation. But I was very suspicious of him and his new girl, especially when he gave the woman a secret phone to use. I don't know if it's that I don't trust him or that I don't trust her, but something is definitely up there.

In the end, Joan and Calder did work together, but I have a feeling that may not last long. And speaking of uneasy allies, Arthur decided to accept the job offer from Ryan McQuaid. Ryan isn't an agent and he's definitely interested in Annie, which makes me wonder if she'll break her rule about fraternization for him.

Whether she does or not, Annie has a new mission and it looks like this season is going to be all about discovering who the Altans are working with and who has decided to go after them. I smell another Big Bad coming our way and I cannot wait to see who it is.

My favorite bits:

Annie: "You look good."
Auggie: "I've taken up Judo. You should check it out, it's a hoot."

Annie and Auggie laughing when he asked if she wanted to make out or something. Very sweet.

Auggie instinctively knowing that Annie wasn't telling the truth. I love how he knows her so well.

Being completely shocked when Annie gave herself a shot in the leg. What just happened?

Ryan: "Based on what I found out, I was expecting you to be a little more dead."

Ryan: "Most spies I know are lying sons of bitches."
Annie: "Well, I'm not most spies."

Calder backing Joan up.

Knowing what the blood meant as soon as I saw it.

Annie finding Charlie's coin in the rubble.

Calder: "You said you wanted a mission. Well now you've got one."

Arthur taking Ryan up on his offer. This is going to get interesting.

Annie giving Charlie's coin to Auggie.
