cold caseThe highly-anticipated new season of Cold Case is finally here. Detective Lilly Rush and the rest of the squad will be re-opening yet another unsolved case in the episode called “Thrill Kill,” which airs tonight at 9pm ET/PT on CBS. But apart from its chilling yet uplifting storylines, another thing to watch out for is the premiere episode's soundtrack which will feature the songs of the Grammy Award-winning seminal grunge band, Nirvana.

Created by Meredith Stiehm, Cold Case is a series that follows a police division as they investigate old and unsolved crimes.  Set in the city of Philadelphia, the show stars Kathryn Morris (Detective Lilly Rush), Danny Pino (Det. Scotty Valens), John Finn (Lt. John Stillman), Thom Barry (Det. Will Jeffries), Jeremy Ratchford (Det. Nick Vera), and Tracie Thomas (Det. Kat Miller).

Read on to find out what's in store for season 5.

Set several weeks after the season 4 finale where Lilly was shot and critically wounded, the season 5 opener sees Lilly returning to work and attempting to convince Syillman, as well as herself, that she's emotionally ready to lead the re-opening of the 1994 case of three slain boys after new evidence suggests that the boys' real killer may still be at large.  The episode is directed by Alex Zakrzewski and guest stars Raphael Sbarge and Melissa Leo.

Like other previous episodes, Cold Case will be featuring distinctive use of "flashback" scenes-within-scenes and period music.  In “Thrill Kill,” producers of the show have chosen to include some of Nirvana's memorable hits like "All Apologies," "Stay Away," "If You Must," "Lithium," "Drain You," "Heart Shaped Box," "Something in the Way" and "Come as You Are."

"We're thrilled to be featuring Nirvana songs exclusively throughout this chilling episode about two seemingly nihilistic male teens who may have been falsely accused and convicted of murdering three 10-year-old boys," show Executive Producer Veena Sud, who wrote the episode, said. "Nirvana's music not only evokes the era when this case's killings took place but brings a starkness and poetry to the story that deeply enhances it."
